Peace and Sports - partners
The Peace and Sports programme is implemented by a consortium of 6 organisations in Uganda, Kenya and Sudan. In Europe the programme is represented by IKV Pax Christi Netherlands.
Kenya
LOKADO is an implementing agency in Lokichoggio, Oropoi and Kakuma, Kenya. It operates programs to address social economic disparities and check the rampant cross-border violence and insecurity, so as to allow the peaceful co-existence and better cross border utilisation of pastoral resources.
SOPA International is a Kenyan initiated organisation committed to breaking the cycle of violence by transforming the children and young people into agents of peace. This is done by actively engaging and training children and youth in non-violent conflict resolution mechanisms and imparting in them life-support skill. SOPA International uses sports and sporting spirit to engage the youth in conscientious self realisation.
Uganda
KOPEIN is an interfaith organisation working to promote peace and fundamental human rights in Kotido district and neighbouring communities (North Eastern Uganda). The organisation is a joint peace initiative of four major denominations operating in Kotido namely: Catholic, Muslim, Church of Uganda, and Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG). The organisation’s target groups include the kraal leaders, diviners/soot tellers, women and young warriors.
Sudan
PDA is a non-governmental organization in Southern Sudan, and is aimed at improving living conditions of marginalized communities of Murle, Kachipo, Jie and Anyuak in Pibor County. Its priority programs include education, water, food, security; health and peace building initiatives that enhance coexistence among communities within its areas of operation.
The Catholic Diocese of Torit (CDOT) is a local church organisation in the Eastern Equatorial region of South Sudan. By taking over the responsibility for provision of health services, water supplies and food security and education in different parts of the diocese, CDOT struggles hard to support the war affected population and build up a modest allow some development to take place every now and quite a few implications for the peace process on the local level, as it creates a situation of trust between members of the diocese and the quarreling parties.
Kuron Peace Village is an initiative of emeritus Bishop Paride Taban, and is geared towards improving the otherwise volatile peace situation in southern Sudan by bringing various ethnic communities together and thereby helping to reduce tensions and divisions among these communities. The organisation also strives to provide common economic and social activities that will help bolster understanding. Examples are the establishing of a youth centre and a education centre, organising common communal activities such as sports for the youth.
Netherlands
IKV Pax Christi is an international peace movement and has been involved in the problem of cattle raiding in the Horn of Africa since the nineties. IKV Pax Christi is assisting the organisations in this Peace and Sports programme for youth warriors. In the Netherlands it creates awareness on the issue of “cattle raiding” and the Peace and Sports programme by public campaigning.
