Caucasus
The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 sparked several wars in the southern Caucasus. Armenia supported the Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh that rose in rebellion against Azerbaijan to declare their autonomous republic independent. Abkhazia and South Ossetia have tried to secede from Georgia. All three conflicts have been 'frozen' since 1994. There are no large-scale hostilities, but there is also no peace. That means that more than a million refugees cannot return home. As of today, there are no prospects for a lasting settlement for any of these conflicts.
IKV Pax Christi works with various partners in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and the disputed areas Nagorno-Karabakh and South Ossetia. Each of our partners is firmly rooted in local society and has a robust political profile. They work under difficult circumstances to resolve conflicts peacefully and to create a society in which each individual's rights are respected.
